The next meditation as world service is Tuesday in the U.S. and Wednesday, August 21, (1:46 am GMT full moon) for points east of Greenwich; it is the second or blue moon of Leo. We will continue the themes from last month highlighting the process of growth from dependence to independence to interdependence, or subconscious to conscious to super-conscious. This sign of Leo is usually associated with individuality and the gifts that conscious self awareness brings, such as self-determination, self-governance, self-regulation, self-discipline and self-reliance-as in Emerson's famous essay "Self-Reliance," and the "Sovereignty of Self," an idea credited to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, co-founder of the Women's Suffrage movement. The individual as self, soul or self-awareness has deep and far reaching implications both for the individual, for its group nature and for science.
In the words of Vaclav Havel quoted last month, "In everyone there is some longing for humanity's rightful dignity, for moral integrity, for free expression of being and a sense of transcendence over the world of existence. Yet…each person is capable, to a greater or lesser degree, of coming to terms with living the lie….In everyone there is some willingness to merge with the anonymous crowd and to flow comfortably along with it down the river of pseudo-life….it is a challenge to the vey notion of identity itself," (Living in Truth, p.54). The right to live a private life unfettered by a government with ever-increasing powers of surveillance is much at issue today. Spying and lying about it have become nasty habits for governments, groups and individuals today. It increases suspicion and distrust. A culture of peace based upon right human relations is in stark contrast to the spy culture growing all around us. The threat, of course, is totalitarian control vs human rights: the right not to have surveillance in your home, your computer, your car, your phone or any other place that is protected or implied in the Constitution.
Is it not possible to consider an organizational structure that recognizes the sovereignty of the adult self as the foundational stone of the one humanity in addition to nations, governing structures, families and corporations? Universal rights and responsibilities begin on an individual level the same for all, as the foundation of world citizenship. The idea of world citizenship is not new; it was first expressed in Ancient Greece, along with the idea of democracy. In later years Thomas Paine elaborated on the idea: "The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren and to do good is my religion." One Humanity made of sovereign human beings is a concept that substands and is more fundamental than the concept of united nations, but harder to organize before the digital age. The Tibetan identified the two key structural concepts as "the value of the individual and the fact of the One Humanity.' The sovereignty of self is an extension of this idea as the fundamental life principle of humanity.
Democracy of Equality
The democracy of equality between men and women is less than 100 years old. The first true centennial of the democracy won't be until 2019! 'Women who are slaves give birth to men who are slaves,' Helena Roerich wrote. The end of slavery in the U.S. and Great Britain, and the end of serfdom in Russia are all less than 200 years old. And the war for civil rights and equal rights is not over but goes on in every generation. The March on Washington and Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech happened 50 years ago and recent legislation on voter's rights seem to be reverting to an earlier time. We have the inalienable right and responsibility to think and to examine our laws, our lives, and our natures.
Theories of Soul or Self
The ancient Greek term 'psyche' later became 'soul' and today is usually referred to as mind or consciousness. Buddhists have always used the term consciousness or mind and Bailey is typically inclusive of as many different terms from East and West as is generous. Finding the neurological correlates of consciousness (NCCs) by studying brain-based changes and correlating them with conscious experience, such as seeing an object, is one method of study advanced in the last 20 years by brain scans. From the theoretical side, the two leading positions have been held by Francis Crick, co-discoverer of DNA who believes that the soul dies with the brain, and Nobel laureate Sir John Eccles, who considers the soul or psyche to be a separate entity from brain and body and continues as a different type of matter similar to an electromagnetic wave. The ongoing scientific search is often entangled in belief systems.
The electro-magnetic wave theory would seem to have much in common with Bailey's theory of the 7 rays of the electromagnetic spectrum. Is it possible that the soul is in that domain and moment in time just before a particle or a wave forms? If a particle forms, then memory is contained in experience in life as phenomena. If a wave forms then memory flows after death, like that of the near-death experiencer Eban Alexander, the neurosurgeon, whose account is still on the NY Times best-seller list, and who now believes in rebirth. Is it possible that the intuitional faculty of super-consciousness could be correlated to a wave and the concrete mind to a particle? The Tibetan writes that "the energy of the intuition" reflected "in the lower nature is the mind or the principle of intelligence" (Esoteric Psychology, Vol. II, p. 70). The key factors would be the capacity, persistence and role of memory, as well as the androgynous nature of the intuition before the material split into two, male and female, nature of the form world. The Tibetan calls the plane of intuition the plane of the "divine Hermaphrodite" and writes that the 7th ray energy has a special relationship to the plane of intuition (A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, p. 328). The "soul" may indeed prove to be a scientifically irreducible entity, such as gravity or mass. Walter Penrose and others propose just such a theory, as I understand it, that consciousness arises from proteins at the site of quantum processes preceding structural formation, like subatomic microtubules. Would it be what we have always called the etheric substructure or scaffolding of all formations? Or, like resuscitation specialist Sam Parnia suggests, the psyche or consciousness may, like the electromagnetic spectrum, exit in its own domain. Science and the soul might be considered before we begin our meditation of direct contact with the soul.
Right relationship between the whole and the individual unit is the central universal polarity that recurs again and again in world affairs and therefore in world service meditation. Raising this polarity up to its reunion on the plane of intuition where the pre-phenomenal whole is seen is an ongoing visualization. The meditative use of intuitive perception creates a field of unity and releases creative energy flooding the world with light and goodwill, the two primary energies of mind and heart, until an antahkarana bridge between the super-conscious self and the conscious /subconscious self actually results in overcoming ourselves and achieving the conscious direction of social evolution.
Best wishes for a meditation from the center of the soul releasing the gift wave of light and goodwill in your life, in your group, and in the world.
