A Higher Interlude Begins

Steve Nation
March 2010

The moon gives us a picture of the rhythms and cycles of life. The tiniest slither of a crescent grows into a fuller crescent of light … as the nights go on the lighted crescent gradually merges into a circle … and then, for a night or two, we see the moon as this magical, abundant, perfectly round, full golden sphere of light.

At the time of the new moon our nights are dark — only the smallest crescent of sunlight is reflected onto the Earth. When the moon is full our nights are bathed in the soft sensitive shimmering light of the sun reflected off the moon.

This pattern of the moon at night and the light it reflects is like the breath or the beat of the heart. It points us to something essential and universal. It is a natural rhythm of life that we are a part of.

Esotericism tells us that there is also a larger rhythm to the annual cycle of 12 or sometimes 13 full moons. Aries is the sign of birth and beginnings and the spiritual year is said to start with the three full moon festivals of Aries, Taurus and Gemini. These three are thought of as a higher interlude in the rhythm — this is reflected in human affairs by the fact that Aries has been observed through the centuries as Easter in the Christian calendar, and Taurus has usually been observed as the sacred ceremony of Wesak in the Buddhist calendar. The Alice Bailey teachings suggest Gemini has now become a new emerging Festival for Humanity as a whole — a celebration of the human quality of goodwill — simple, transparent, humble goodwill.

So we meet at this first of the three Spiritual festivals — the first of three points — three notes of sound that together form the higher interlude. These festivals are essentially a time for the practice of group meditation as a technique for world service. In meditation the higher interlude marks a time of openness to spiritual impression. It is a time for contemplation of the silence of the Sacred Presence — a time to sense Reality on its own plane, right outside of time and space. Think in terms of our true nature as soul and personality. In the higher interlude it is the soul that is active, and the mind responsive. The higher interlude marks a time when the outgoing consciousness is gathered inward… In the higher interlude, abstract or divine thought impresses the soul and is transmitted to the waiting mind, whereas in the lower interlude the mind, through concrete thought and an attempt to embody divine thought in form, impresses the brain and produces action through the medium of the physical body. [White Magic, p. 517]

If we apply this idea to the collective the higher planes of consciousness can be thought of as the soul of humanity, those levels of consciousness where the Great Ones, Muses and Immortals are to be found. So to think of the Three Festivals of Easter, Wesak and Humanity as the Higher Interlude in the cycle of twelve full moon festivals is to think of our group meditation at this time as being unusually oriented towards a Silent Presence where divine thought shines a light into the waiting mind of humanity. It is a higher interlude for the one mind and one heart of incarnated human beings. Just think about that and the implications for our meditation work. As a planetary group of meditators we can imagine ourselves observing this process of divine, abstract thought impressing the field of mind. And this higher process continues and builds throughout next month, to reach a point of fullness in Taurus and the Wesak Festival … and on through the following month to a culmination in Gemini with the Festival of Humanity and our work together as a global community, sounding the Great Invocation on World Invocation Day.

This higher interlude inevitably flows into a lower interlude — a cycle of nine (sometimes 10) full moon festivals when what is happening is that the high impressions that have flowed during Aries — Taurus — Gemini reach out through the creative mind of humanity to impress the brain. It is during this lower cycle that we expect to see transformation taking form in institutions, cultures and political processes. Another way of putting this is to say that the lower interlude is the time to expect achievements in human and earthly terms, triumphs in action on such issues as climate change, enhancing biodiversity at a local or regional level, trade policies that assist the ending of poverty and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals … and so on.

So, for now and the coming two months, we are in the higher interlude. Can we pause and enter into Silence as a Presence — approach that centre of awesome Silence and be still in its Light.

O Thou Who givest sustenance to the universe,
From Whom all things proceed
To Whom all things return,
Unveil to us the place of the true Spiritual Sun
Hidden by a disc of golden Light
That we may know the Truth
And do our whole duty
As we journey to Thy sacred feet.

Aries is a time of beginning and of initiation of new ideas — a first ray sign. It is a time when the causes of future developments are set in place. Think about this in terms of the keynote: I come forth and from the plane of mind I rule. 'I', the eternal centre, come forth into incarnation with a Plan. I will take many lives with the purpose of learning how to dissipate the glamours and illusions of separateness and selfishness so that I will ultimately rule from the plane of mind. Think about this in terms of your own soul decision — eons ago — to enter into personality after personality until sufficient experience has been gained that the soul will be able to rule from the plane of mind — that the soul will be fully conscious on the plane of mind.

Another keynote to have in mind through this Festival and the other two: Let sustained effort be the seed of synthesis, the force which binds together that which has been separated. This will be the keynote being used by many meditators around the world who are affiliated in some way with the Lucis Trust. Think about this now, in Aries: divine thought impressing the soul of humanity with a call to sustained effort as the very essence, the seed, of synthesis. Through the will and the effort to unify in thought and deed we human beings are becoming agents of synthesis. Incarnation tends to make us think short term — we look for immediate growth — yet in the withiness of things, in the realm of the soul where there is no death — development that truly leads to synthesis comes from effort sustained over a life-time. Think about that quality of sustained effort, and how important it is now — important for the birthing of a new civilization.

In a message titled 'The Cycle of Conferences' in March 1945 The Tibetan spoke of great Forces to be released during the coming festivals of Aries, Taurus and Gemini. It is important to remember that at this time the battle of the Second World War was coming to an end, the defeat of the Axis powers was clear — but men and women in the armed forces from US, Soviet Union, the Commonwealth, Brazil, Philippines and elsewhere were marching through Europe and fighting across the Pacific. Victory was in sight but the world was in a state of fatigue, distress, shock and grief. The Tibetan comments that what people wanted more than anything was a period of tranquility and calm — time to recover from all the stress. Yet this was the time when the post-war world was being designed and when the United Nations was in its initial planning stages. This was a crucial time to plan for unity and for a future vision of sharing.

At this time the Tibetan tells us that Great Beings would overshadow humanity during the three festivals. At Easter, during the Aries Festival, there would be an inflow of Forces of Restoration, directed by a being known as the Spirit of Resurrection. In Taurus, at the Wesak Festival, there would be another inflow, this time from the Forces of Enlightenment focused through three great beings: the Lord of the World, the Light of Life Itself; the Buddha, the Lord of Wisdom; and the Christ, the Lord of Love. And finally, in Gemini, during the Festival of Humanity, Forces of Reconstruction would flow primarily through the Christ.

At this Easter / Aries full moon, now in the year 2010, it seems helpful for us to ponder and be open to the presence of the Spirit of Resurrection. Remember, in the annual cycle, we are working in the higher interlude of the Three Spiritual Festivals — so just imagine this living Spiritual Entity standing now with healing in his wings — in the hidden subtle worlds. His healing has the power to bring livingness and vitality to all who work in the world for synthesis and oneness. We meditators can demand His life-giving presence, and we can let our demand go forth with such intensity that the Hierarchy will be called into active response and will immediately release the potency of this Spirit into the hearts of men everywhere. [Externalization of the Hierarchy, pp. 458-9] :

It is this living spiritual Entity … Who will restore livingness to men's spiritual aims and life to their planning; Who will engender anew the vitality needed to implement the trends of the New Age and Who will guide humanity out of the dark cave of death, isolation and selfishness into the light of the new day. [Externalization, p. 457]

Imagine the New Group of World Servers and the disciples and initiates at the heart of the group being flooded with these energies. Imagine servers all over the world being empowered to think with increasing clarity, with a practical attitude focused on what is achievable, with fixed determination and active planning. Think of the world work for transformation in all its many fields — climate change, work for right relations with the environment, work for health care, work for human rights and the alleviation of poverty, work to ensure all have access to good, healthy food, work on difficult political issues like fair trade between developed and developing countries; work to bring healing to difficult painful race relations where there has been a history of oppression and cruelty. Imagine the Life and vitality of the Spirit of Resurrection flowing into the network of service around the world so that servers can feel its flow through their lives and their work. Let Life, Abundant Life, flow through the service network so that all our human efforts to birth and build right relations might be blessed.
