Who's Directing our Direction?

Joann S. Bakula
November 2007

The next full moon is Saturday, the 24th at 2:31 pm UT, 9:31 am ET in USA. The seed thought, "I see the goal. I reach that goal and then I see another," helps all of humanity as well as the new group of world servers to ask, What is the next immediate step ahead for humanity? Some suggestions might include: Individual and group awareness of our relationship to the whole. Planetary sciences, including climate change. Millennium Development Goals. War avoidance and the development of a Culture of Peace. Or, it could be said, an increase in light and love or powers of mind and heart, together.

We have many methods to aid us in this quest: reason, logic, idealism, intuition are all tools we bring to this meditation of Sagittarius, and its principal theme. The conscious mind has a primary role in using reason, analysis, and judgment or appraisal. We also, unfortunately, have ignorance; the larger part of which is, the raja and jnana yogis tell us, false and inaccurate knowledge, not no knowledge. The jewel in the cognitive crown is intuition. Intuition is not a cognitive function, though; it cannot be arrived at with any of the tools of the threefold lower self. In technical terms, it may be called a type of post-formal operations. Reasoning to understanding is not intuition, Alice Bailey and the Tibetan write, yet define intuition as the power of pure reason, an expressioin of the buddhic principle (Glamour: A World Problem, pp. 4 & 81), part of the spiritual triad of atma-buddhi (soul)-manas (higher mind). Yet there is the suggestion by both Bailey and Jung that the study of symbols helps to develop the mind's facility toward higher functioning. The intuition may be drawn into activity because a symbol is the outer, visible form of an inner spiritual reality, and the facility of discovering the subjective reality behind a form leads to the awakening of the intuition. Intuition, illumination and truth are often correlated It is interesting to consider, in the light of this, what the lie does to our power to use the intuition and what kinds of distortions (or glamours) we put between ourselves and our ability to see in the light of the intuition.

The symbol of the constellation Sagittarius, in the West, is the archer with arrow drawn, suggestive of direction, and begs the question, Who is directing the direction we are going in? As individuals, as world servers, as nations, and as one humanity? Insights into all of these questions can lead to greater light on the paths ahead. Two keynotes of Sagittarius are aspiration and direction, the former coming from the personality, the latter from the soul, standing for atma-buddhi or will-intuition.

The labor of Hercules is with the predacious iron birds, which he defeats using sound. He also recalled the words, The flame that gleams beyond the mind reveals the direction sure, suggestive of the intuition, and the plane of intuition, the flame in the Heart. The word 'direction' is key to the evolutionary process, to the concept of light...and to the motivating power behind manifestation. Seeing the goal implies having a vision and direction, with idealism playing a crucial part in conception as well as devotion. All of these play a part in this important meditation in Sagittarius.

Often, direction is expressed as a ladder, whether the career ladder, class ladder or Jacob's ladder, the rise and fall of images as they go up and down are the stuff that dreams and nightmares are made of. Right now 76% of the people in the U.S. think we are going in the wrong direction. The disconnect between the electorate and the elected is noticeable here. International interest in climate change is drawing much interest, attention and hope, as the nations meet in Bali to further discussion of how we may improve our negative impact on the environment, and on other living things. How we can adapt to One World living. Just as the individual...has to learn the art or science of relationship to other men and to his environment, so humanity as a whole has to learn its relationship to that which lies above and beyond mankind and with that which is below and left behind. This involves a sense of proportion which can be attained only by the mind principle in man. This also involves the direction of training for disciples. The distinction between the training direction of the past and the one of the future is from emphasis on application to the individual or to humanity as a whole. The true method will be to develop...the sense of synthesis and of 'place' in the One World, leading to decentralization.

Seeing the earth as sacred and as One whole is not a sweet, nor sentimental view. It sees predator and prey alike equally fated to a brief existence, skull and cross bone crucified, no different than a human. All response at death might be the same as Henry Miller's, It was one, long, rosy crucifixion. Every life is heroic, as all forms fight to protect a body that will die anyway. When seen as sacred, all life is on the same heroic journey of self-sacrifice. And that means that often, for all, healing is needed. The Tibetan describes a three step process of healing, best accomplished by using the ajna center, the director. First, focus is placed on the whole, then the magnetic field is spiritually vitalized, and this is followed by the directing of radiance, and of the power to heal (Esoteric Healing, p. 582). The magnetic direction today is in planetary thinking and awareness of which human methods have had adverse effects on the environment. Magnetic response to the whole living system of planet earth has become an individual right and response. No longer is it the exclusive province of government regulation or lack thereof. If you could but grasp the full significance of detachment and stand serene as the observing Director, there would be no more waste motion, no more mistaken moves and no more false interpretations, seeing others through distorted and prejudiced vision and--above all--no more misuse of force. (Telepathy and the Etheric Vehicle, p. 243.)

What direction nations are drawn to by inherent ray energies is also being highlighted this lower interlude of 2007. The rays of the nations, both personality and soul rays (The Destiny of the Nations, p. 50), give us knowledge of their qualities and therefore probable direction, now and in the future.

  • China 3, 1 (soul ray of power)
  • India 4, 1 (soul ray of power)
  • U.K. 1, 2 (soul ray of love)
  • U.S. 6, 2 (soul ray of love)
  • Germany 1, 4 (soul ray of harmony thru conflict)
  • France 3, 5 (soul ray of knowledge)
  • Italy, 4, 6 (soul ray of Idealism)
  • Russia 6, 7 (soul ray of order)

Much is revealed by knowledge of the seven ray theory both for nations and for individuals, especially as it relates to right contribution to the whole, and to the beauty of humanity's symphony of sounds. Nicholas Roerich, well known Russian artist and scientist, dedicated his life to the healing of humanity with the medicine of beauty and knowledge. May the beauty of your own soul's creation be visible for the healing of the world.

May your own next step ahead stand revealed and the direction of home on each of the planes be magnetic.
