A Revelation of Divinity

Joann S. Bakula
February, 2013

This Pisces meditation is the last of the nine meditations on the 'attributes of deity' leading to the higher spiritual interlude of March-April-May and the three primary aspects of deity: creative intelligence, love-wisdom and will-purpose, so beautifully encapsulated in the Great Invocation. "Thus the twelve festivals will constitute a revelation of divinity ….Thus will the Will of God be implemented by Love and manifested intelligently, for this mankind is ready, and for this the Earth waits" (Alice Bailey, The Externalisation of the Hierarchy, p. 422).

Attributes
An attribute is defined as a feature or characteristic; synonyms are quality, character, trait, property, particularity, symbol, facet and note. Just as the major three meditations of the higher interlude establish the three divine aspects, the remaining nine "will establish the divine attributes in the consciousness" of humanity (ibid., 421). Together they are a spiritual Approach to divinity by the human family in quest of the nature and qualities of God, reality or energy, and these both of God transcendent and of God immanent. The Great Invocation is a brief but powerful tool to open and link the minds, hearts and wills of humanity to the Intelligence, Love and Will of God and gradually shorten the distance between them by conditioning civilization to become responsive to these qualities. This is the essence of this Spiritual Approach through meditation, the goal being a dynamic circulation between the three planetary centers of Will, Heart and eventually mind, represented by humanity itself.

Some attributes of deity are already expressing, some are being presented and others are undefined attributes, as far out of range of human comprehension as the dimensions of the whole earth would have been to primitive humans. "Love is such a presented attribute, and it took a great Avatar, such as the Christ, to grasp for humanity and present to humanity its significance. It has taken two thousand years for this presented attribute to take even the form it has in the consciousness of the human family, and those of us who are students of world affairs well know how unknown real love is ….Love is the presented attribute which is at this time working into manifestation. Wisdom began to emerge in the time of the Buddha, and was the specified forerunner of love. Synthesis is another of the presented attributes and is only now making its appeal for recognition." (Alice Bailey, Esoteric Psychology, Vol. II, p. 398.) We are now at last cognizant of the whole earth as a planet and able to leave its surface for exploration of other planets. This is just the first baby step — a physical one — preceding knowledge of our capacity as one entity: the human organism. Understanding of what intelligence really is and what love/wisdom actually means lies ahead for infant humanity, but is well anchored by the gifted enlightened people of the past.

Bailey predicts that "The attributes already expressing themselves somewhat will achieve an intensified livingness ….They will form the stepping stones across the river of life down which the new attributes may come, presenting themselves in the Persons of Those Who are destined to reveal them eventually to man." Plato, too, was one of these enlightened men who "endeavored to picture...the completeness of the Whole and the intricacy of the ideas which have come forth as an expression of that Whole." Centuries and millennium pass between these figures who stand out for the ages as evolutionaries. "These Avatars are possessed by the attribute; They intelligently comprehend it and are used to 'anchor' the attribute in human consciousness. There then ensues a long period of adjustment, development and emergence." (ibid., 399) At times it can appear that humanity is going backwards, that ill will is far more powerful than goodwill, and that the urge to separativeness far outweighs the urge to integrate and unify, but these periods only stand to illustrate the contrast between evolution and involution, progress and setbacks.

"The four minor rays, or rays of attribute, are concerned with the attributes which are definitely and slowly coming into expression and to fruition — knowledge, synthesis, beauty, science, idealism and order. But there are others, further back behind the scenes, held in latency for the proper period and time" (ibid., 397) These rays of attribute, as we know, are subrays of the third ray of Creative intelligence or Intelligent Activity, as contrasted to all the unintelligent activity that seems to preoccupy humanity in the unawakened stages of development. As the energy of idealism and devotion, so predominant in humanity, merges into the 7th ray of Order and Ritual or methodology, we might see the underlying synthesis of the web of life coordinate human living in a new order of harmonious and sustainable intelligent activities, less self destructive and selfish. Finding and expressing the nature of these new incoming energies and attributes is our work in meditation for world service. It is intuition in service.

One recent example of this new methodology and world order is a Nova program called "Earth From Space" (PBS Feb. 13, 2013), of the many satellites that observe earth and collect data 24/7 year after year. The incredible pictures that arise from this data are not limited to the visible electro-magnetic spectrum of human eyes but are inclusive of the much wider range from infra red to radio waves. (This is the upside of what many people view as spy satellites!) The satellites continue to give us pictures of earth's water vapor, heat and cloud formation, ocean currents and a vast array of raw data that is turned into maps and visual images by scientists who are seeing the earth's own cycles and systems is an emerging new systems theory vastly more detailed, expanded, and integrated than in previous worldviews.

The Quarters of the Spiritual Year
We, too, as meditators, consider the cycles of the year in quarters. Not entirely unlike the financial world, we consider the spiritual year as one breath with four quarters: inhalation, higher interlude, exhalation, and lower interlude of three months each. This meditation in Pisces is the last month of the inhalation before the higher quarter of spiritual work which conditions the coming year. Pisces "by reason of the precession the constellation is now the first of the zodiac" and "entirely within its boundaries lies the sign Aries; the vernal equinox being located" here and slowly drifting toward Aquarius this "equinoctial point is known as the First of Aries, and the Greenwich of the Sky" (Richard H. Allen, Allen's Star Names, p. 337).

Pranayama or the practice of concentrating on the breath and its cycles is a well known aspect of meditation as it's taught in Hinduism and Buddhist vipassana, for instance. In this Spiritual Approach of world service we apply the idea to the spiritual calendar and work with twelve meditations in a quartet of rhythm that characterizes the breath. In Pisces we gather up through 'inhalation' that strength and preparedness necessary to receive the annual inflow of energy characteristic of the coming higher interlude of the cycle.

Will in Its Two Aspects
Pisces, being the last of the twelve months and meditations, is also associated with endings, completion, the first ray in its destructive aspect of death, and in its positive aspect as enduring will in relation to Taurus. Schopenhauer made this interesting observation, which is known as his theory of palingenesis. "What sleep is for the individual, death is for the 'will.' It would not endure to continue the same actions and sufferings throughout an eternity without true gain, if memory and individuality remained to it. It flings them off, and this is Lethe, and through this sleep of death it reappears fitted out with another intellect as a new being; a new day tempts to new shores. These constant new births, then, constitute the succession of the life-dreams of a will which in itself is indestructible, until, instructed and improved by so much and such various successive knowledge in a constantly new form, it abolishes and abrogates itself," from The World as Will and Representation (cited in Viviekenanda's, Raja Yoga, p. 260). His theories influenced both Nietzsche and Freud.

The seed thought or keynote of this meditation in Pisces is, "I leave the Father's home and turning back, I save." It is essentially the keynote of redemption. Following Aquarius, the World Server, is this meditation on the archetype of divinity as World Savior. As we complete the time of the Piscean Age and move into the new age of Aquarius, we save what is needed and necessary in the preservation of true values, and move on from the inequalities we once called 'morals.' As we complete the yearly cycle with this meditation, we gain perspective on what is ending, what is going on, and what is to come.

May you meet anew the attributes of divinity in yourself, in your group, and in the world.
