Leo, as Constellation, World Disciple and Metaphor

Joann S. Bakula
August 2009

As we prepare for this 5th of the monthly full moon meditation rituals of spiritual approach and world service in the month of August, celebrating the constellation of Leo, we reach out to all who serve the world, especially in science, during this U.N. International Year of Astronomy in 2009. We are entering a three and nine year cycle of tension/ expansion for the new group of world servers, following a period of crisis involving financial-economic-employment-money issues and health-poverty issues, both related to the 3rd ray of creative intelligence and the 5th ray of analysis and problem-solving scientific thinking. This expansion can already be seen in the 40th anniversary of the "giant leap for mankind", with its first pictures of planet earth seen from a detached point of view as one beautiful living system of land mass and circulating oceans. Today we have pictures of Saturn and plan manned-missions to Mars. Vision, science and the arms race gave us the motivation to expand outward and now we have become aware of our home planet as an integrated life-form, expanding our sensitive awareness-awareness amplified in Leo--to climate change, the circulation of ocean currents, CO 2 production, and carbon footprints. Some esotericists are expanding their awareness of the antahkaranas connecting the planets, especially Venus to Earth. "There are 'rainbow bridges' carrying the sevenfold energies of the seven rays from planet to planet, from system to system, and from plane to plane on cosmic levels. It is over these bridges that the will of the related spiritual Identities is projected, producing that synthesis of effort which is distinctive of the cooperative systemic life." (RI 406) And "Forget not that relating our planet to the planet Venus is a planetary antahkarana, passing from thence to the Heart of the Sun and later to the cosmic mental plane" (RI 406).

We are, as meditators in Leo, "motivated by spiritual intent and able to perceive the uses of inherent sensitivity…mentally polarized and profoundly aware of the realities, forces and energies of existence" while, in our deepest intuition we are "motivated by the energies pouring from the 'heart of the sun'", the second ray energies of love-wisdom revealing the synthesis of life. (EA 307-308). This powerful influx of the second ray energies of love, compassion, wisdom and higher relationships is available to us in this 5th meditation of the spiritual year, keeping in mind Alice Bailey and the Tibetan's definition of spiritual. "The word 'spiritual' refers neither to religious matters (so-called) nor to the Path of Discipleship or the Path of major or higher initiations, but to the relationships on every level…from the lowest to the highest". It relates to "moving forward from one level of consciousness" to the next, to the "power to see the vision", to "every effort of the evolutionary process," and to "all activity which drives the human being forward towards some form of development" whether physical, emotional, mental or intuitional. (RI 364) The spiritual people of the world, those who ponder deeply on humanity and the planet as a whole with goodwill and love-wisdom, are our fellow meditators, not just the small groups of esotericists.

Looking at the whole system, whether the planet or humanity, in terms of health can we apply the knowledge of esoteric healing to deepen our awareness of underlying prime movers? The three major laws of health from the point of view of esoteric knowledge are 1) "the will to live, a manifestation of the first aspect of the Logos, will or power", 2) "equality of rhythm, a manifestation of the 2nd aspect …love or wisdom", and 3) "crystallization…the activity or foundational aspect." (EH 105). The "equality of rhythm" has especial significance to us, who meditate monthly using this new 7th ray structure of unified effort. Meditation at the full moon is a rhythmic expression of intelligent love equal to all branches of human endeavor, not just the esoteric. We add structure to the natural meditation already in progress joining scientists, business people, artists, the religious, writers and communicators, educators, politicians and world leaders who ponder deeply on the best way ahead in their fields and how to serve the common good. "The whole trend of medical science should now be awake… and moving towards the study of vitalization and circulation, for these two are closely related" (EH 107). To be increasingly effective, our full moon approach to the Heart center can expand to include all who seek world betterment in one planetary ritual, if it is presented correctly, as a simple ritual not dependent upon any religion, but including all or none. One hour a month of deep, one-pointed pondering on Humanity as a single entity in planetary relationship, with purity of motive, goodwill and intelligent love could do much to heal world kama-manas and integrate the world of ideas. We define as spiritual anything that leads to world betterment, and this includes the circulation of thought between all aspects of human endeavor and the planetary life, directing the energy of love-wisdom and compassion in an inclusive field.

The Plan is for humanity as a single entity to learn how to skillfully move ahead as one body and achieve "divine circulatory flow" to all parts. The circulation of blood, oxygen and prana to all parts of the one Human body is essential for health and life. "Healing work is circulatory", Alice Bailey and the Tibetan put in italics (EH 287), and that includes the circulation of ideas presented in intelligent words, countering the vicious tabloid talk of distortion and slander, so prevalent today. Compassion or "the love aspect shows itself through the heart, the circulatory system and the nervous system" (EH 106). The Heart center controls the life, and circulation is its primary function.

The Constellation Leo
For those who are star-gazers and astronomers, as well as esotericists, we note that Saturn has been in the constellation of Leo all summer. Saturn itself, the actual planet, which we know as the sacred planet of the 3rd ray of Intelligent and Creative Activity, can be seen in the western sky. The astrological calculation puts Saturn in Virgo due to the unfortunate difference between scientific and astrological maps, astrology adding much to our understanding of the quality of the planets, but no longer linked to the actual appearance of the planets, due to the precession of the equinoxes. We can also see in Leo the first-magnitude star Regulus, the regulator, suggestive of exactly which energy we need right now in order to function better and emerge from crisis. Regulation is an important part of intelligent governance insuring health of structures. Regulus is called 'the heart of the Lion,' and the leader of the 'four royal guardians of the heavens,' the four cardinal points with Fomalhaut, Aldebaran and Antares. Regulus is actually four stars, a binary with two other 'proximate' stars. Esoteric knowledge also enables us to add the link from Leo to the heart of the sun, and beyond to Sirius, the brightest star in the heavens, and associated with the Blue Lodge of Masonry, as cosmic energies enter from the field of space. "Astrology is a science which must be restored to its original beauty and truth," the Tibetan writes, and when the "nature of the field of space" and "that which is found within that space" is correctly understood then "the relationships between individual, planetary, systemic and cosmic entities will be grasped" (EA 5). The powerful combination of space science and planetary exploration, combined with esoteric astrology as a science of the seven rays and planets as Higher Intelligences, and expanded to include the power of film and imagination, which gave life to Spock and Vulcan, results in a dynamic new view of who we perceive we are and where we live. These are two of the questions medical doctors use to see if a patient is conscious or unconscious, awake or not: 'Do you know who you are and where you are?' This requires rejoining lower and higher aspects of mind in the antahkarana, united with imagination, seed of the intuition--perhaps then we might be said to be awakening.

Humanity as an Entity
As we take the next step ahead and view humanity as a single entity we leave behind the lower view of humanity as a dysfunctional family of nations, with all that that implies, from rival siblings vying for supremacy, each member competing with the other for favor, to birth order with its entitlement for the eldest, or the superpower of the day imposing its empirical authority on the family as a whole. Everybody wants to rule the world. Each thinks its own is the wisest and most able to "liberate" the others. Which superpower or empire is the parent now? Which social hierarchy is busy promoting themselves and demeaning others? If we are willing to take the next step ahead and see humanity as one single entity instead of a family of groups competing for supremacy, we measure progress in a different way and have a new, higher focus to work from. Viewing humanity as a single entity or body, the Plan for accurate diagnosis, true etiology and effective education and therapy changes entirely. "There is a planetary as well as a systemic circulation, and it is carried on…macrocosmically as well as microcosmically" (CF 902).

Viewing Humanity as an entity, it is the World Disciple or Hercules fighting to overcome itself. Just as "Space is an entity and the entire 'vault of heaven'…is the phenomenal appearance of that entity" (EA 8), so humanity is itself an entity, of which we are all a part, and it is this entity that is of primary concern in our planetary meditation. If we speak of the family of nations we see nations and races competing with each other like sibling rivals in a huge dysfunctional family. Viewed as one, we see it as a dysfunctional body, still uncoordinated and therefore unable to walk. If each part of the body attempted to control instead of cooperate with its opposite, whether we see them as East and West, North and South, black/brown and white, or male and female, then we would go nowhere. All manifestation is composed of essential duality, whether called yin yang or positive and negative. Humanity as one single entity, like any individual or mammal, needs both right and left working in coordination to enable arms and legs work, in order to move ahead, to act and create. Physical nature is designed that way and the pattern holds true through the 4th ray of harmony through conflict or opposites. The tension between structural opposites is what enables activity. Learning to walk and function as one entity is the goal. What if the right leg refused to cooperate with the left? We would be like a child who has not yet learned how to use its body. When we think together, we can act together, building momentum for the thoughtforms based on seeing humanity as one single entity, healthy and functioning as one. This is its basic purpose and the next step ahead in the Plan of love and light

From Camel to Lion to Child
Among the many famous tales of Leo, such as the one of Hercules killing the Nemean Lion in his/her fifth labor, there is one, a favorite among existentialists-humanists, about the spirit in its threefold metamorphosis from camel to lion to child. This is a story of Leo as lion, the bridge between the stage of the camel who bears all, and the child who creates anew.

Famous among transformation myths is the progression from camel to lion to child, the metamorphosis of the spirit in three stages. In this famous story the spirit first bears much, humble in its strength, and able, like a camel, to bear a heavy load. He loves his load. He is obedient. Grazing on the grass of knowledge and language, the camel is burdened with "Thou Shalts", and journeys into its desert. There, in the barren landscape, the spirit as camel overcomes itself in the first stage of the metamorphosis of the spirit, and becomes the lion.

The lion would be the master of his desert and conqueror of his freedom. He needs the mightiest of monstrous adversaries in order to win the day. He fights the dragon of "Thou Shalts" blocking his way. His mightiest weapon is the sacred "No!" The spirit as lion says "I will", and gains its own freedom. It is the power of the lion to win freedom for itself and the power to say no even to duty, as did the Buddha. He sees that yesterday's mores and traditions become the authority of today and are called values. Now he preys on questionable traditions. He preys on illusions. He is free from the herd and preys on their falsehoods. He drags the burden of the beast across the world stage. He overcomes the responsibilities placed upon him by old gods, and claims his rights as an individual. The lion roars for freedom, independence, and self-determination. He creates the freedom for new creation, but not the new creation itself. For this a new being is needed.

To create anew, the spirit needs to become the child. The child is a new beginning. The child overcomes the past with forgetting. It is born innocent, without hate or resentment. For new creation the sacred "Yes!" is needed. To see free of the falsehoods and illusions, the lies and dishonesty, in a new day, the spirit as child is eternally born. It says "Yes!" to beauty, to joy and life made new. The child is called the 'self-propelled wheel.' (It needs no oil.) The child creates new values. It makes all things new. The spirit as child wills its new creation in the dawn of a new time. The child brings a new age.

Freedom
The desire for freedom and to break out of the confines of narrow ideologies and their corrupt politics has always come from the heart of archetypal Leo as the lion. The roar of outrage and refusal to be dominated is one of the main motivators for change throughout history. When we've suffered enough we throw off the burden of what is oppressive. The epitome of Leo is its gift of individuality, which gives us the strength to break out of repressive structures and aspire to freedom. Individuality is the foundation from which the world service and brotherhood of Aquarius, its polar opposite and partner, is attained. Realizing that "meditation is the outstanding creative agent on our planet" (DNA II 202), we identify with the child stage of overcoming the past so that we avoid recreating, time and again, what we have just passed through. In meditation we find the new mind and it finds the new way.

Wishing you all the blessings from the heart of the sun radiating and circulating love-wisdom to you, to your family, to the family of nations, and to Humanity as World Disciple.
